Little Stories of Faith
The Year was 1987 and we were Missionaries in Okinawa... just back to Japan after 5 years in Mainland China. We had opened a small outreach center in Ginowan and were endevouring to get a small home schooling program going for other missionary families in the area.
Close by our center on the road up to the only bus stop in the area a funky local hometown religion had a temple that worshipped God knows what. After we opened up they put up a huge billboard sign (10 feet wide and 50 feet high) of an idol with a head having snakes coming out of it and demons and dragons lurking from all sides. It was evil. Because of the road situation we were forsed to walk by, and walk our children by it several times a day. It's one of those things that living in a non-Christian country you usually kind of try to ignore and forget, but it was so hard to do. Every day our poor little kids had to see this ugly monster and over a period of a few weeks the Lord just allowed a righteous anger to grow in my heart and spirit.
Walking home one day after an afternoon of witnessing I came up to that billboard and it just got me and I stopped and prayed... "Lord you know this thing is as evil as it gets and our poor little kids have to see this thing and walk by this every day. You said if we had the faith of a grain of a mustard seed that we would say unto this mountain be ye cast up and removed into the ocean it would be done for us... so I pray aginst this sign and I claim you would cast this thing into the ocean and protect your children and your little ones... In Jesus Name!" It was a pretty rightgeous and heartfelt prayer and I went on my way home not thinking much more about it.
Prayer Changes Things
Out to sea somewhere down by the Phiilpines a typhoon took a sudden turn north and I remember watching the tv and thinking that was odd. It had been forecast to run in to China but was now barreling North. After 2 days we battened down the hatches and got ready to ride out the storm. In a location where everyone is accustomed to Typhoons this was a pretty severe hit. It started at about 2 in the afternoon and ripped into the island through the night. Somewhere around 8 pm we lost electricity and went to sleep by candle light with the storm battering the world around us.
And Comes a Typhoon Unexpectedly
In the morning we awoke to find trees strewn all around the neighborhood and most of the flat roof houses with all the paint stripped from the windward side side of the house. As we started doing clean up we made an amzing discovery... the huge evil sign which we had been forced to walk by was in pieces. The 3 tellephone poles that had held it up broke and the sign had been ripped to sheads. We watched with solomn faces as the city workers came through to clear the roads and cut the sign in pieces and put it on trash truck to be dumped in an emergency ocean dump. It was such an encouragement to us that God is in control and that heartfelt prayer can change things.
The Next Morning
To finish this story off we soon opened a new outreach center and moved to a different part of Okinawa. Not long after we relocated back to mainland Japan to help with the work there. Every year for 10 years we went back to Okinawa to help with the work there and were shocked to hear the end of the story. The Evil billboard sign had been an advertisement for a 160 demonic idol that was going to be erected on that spot. The weird little local church followed through and built the idol and it was a nightmare to see from miles around. The folks re had worked with prayed against it as we had against the sign and a huge cry came up from people near and far who were forced to look at the evil monstrosity. Finally in a show down with all the local inhabitants the temple was forced to dismantle the idol and very soon after they were investigated by the local government and put out of bussiness for corruption. Seems that the treaurer who was holding the money took off with all the cash. The temple went bust and belly up and that was the end of it.

Pastor O'Neill you might not remember me, but my name is Tish Suzuki. I lived next door to you in Okinawa with my Mom and Dad. Since then my folks have passed away and I came back to the states, but as a kid I remember that sign and I always wondered why they took it away. Such an amazing story to read what happened. Thank you so much. It was so encouraging and I remember how happy my Mom and Dad were when that sign git blown away. Amazing to find your web site and here that. God Bless you and your family.

WOW Tish, that's such a miracle you found our little site and remember that. So sorry to hear about your folks. You all lived up there by the temple if I'm not mistaken. Your dad was in the Japanese self defense force and your mom was from the USA. Your folks were really sweet people and i remember them well. They put up with all our noise from our little school. God Bless 'em! I'm sure they must smile down on you from Heaven.
Isn't the Lord wonderful to let us meet again.
